Core modules

Applied Pedagogy 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in Semester 1 (Autumn intake) and Semester 3 (Spring Intake). This module provides students an opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education. Students will also develop their curriculum specific knowledge and practical skills in lesson planning, delivery, feedback and assessment. Students’ knowledge and skills will be assessed through completion of individual assignments. Students are presented with opportunities to gain peer and lecturer formative feedback on their assessment.

Contemporary Issues in Physical Education 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in Semester 2. This module provides students an opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education. The module will include guided learning through fundamental contemporary issues relating to sociological, cultural, ethical issues relevant to PE. Students will also develop their curriculum specific knowledge and practical skills in lesson planning, delivery, feedback and assessment. Students’ knowledge and skills will be assessed through completion of individual assignments. Students are presented with opportunities to gain peer and lecturer formative feedback on their assessment.

Professional Practice in PE 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in Semester 1 (Autumn intake) and Semester 3 (Spring intake). This module aims to provide an opportunity for the student to apply and develop the theoretical and practical underpinnings already explored in the taught program. Students will apply a variety of approaches to teaching, learning and coaching in the workplace ‘placement’. The student will evaluate their core competencies in PE using and implementing reflective practice concepts. Placement will take place off-site at various placement locations as organised by students. Placement must take place outside of typical class times. Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from placement sites. 

Student will track their progress in the e-Portfolio which they will complete throughout year 1,2,3 and will be able to use it to showcase their knowledge, skills and competencies to potential employers after they finish the course. This will enhance their digital skills and support their development throughout the programme and beyond.

Physiology
20 credits

This module will be delivered in semester 2. The module will provide students with a strong theoretical foundation in physiology related to physical activity and health. Students will gain an understanding of basic scientific and physiological concepts through guided learning in lectures. Students will have the opportunity to explore how general physiological knowledge can be applied to specific practical scenarios relevant to physical education lesson planning, delivery and assessment. Students will gain understanding and awareness of the safety considerations for developing and delivering physical education lessons that reflect a desired physiological outcome. In addition to theoretical understanding, students will have the opportunity to learn practical skills related to physiological testing.

Psychology
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 1 for Autumn intake and Semester 3 for Spring intake. This module introduces students to the applied field of sports psychology and its application to physical education. Students will learn psychological principles and theories that they can use to explain behaviour within their domain of physical education. Students will be guided through the fundamentals of psychology, learning and behaviour change concepts relevant to physical education through scheduled lectures and workshops. Students will have the opportunity to gain feedback on their assessment preparation and further develop their knowledge through tutor interaction and via small group peer discussions during lecture and seminars.

Human Movement 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 2. This module will enable individuals to consider and appreciate how physical education can provide a positive learning environment for the development of a wide range of skills and attributes.

Curriculum Models 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 2. This module builds on the learning, skills and knowledge acquired through the Applied Pedagogy 1 module completed at level 4.

This module provides students an opportunity to further develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education. The module will include guided learning through fundamental pedagogical principles relevant to PE. This module will enable individuals to consider and appreciate how physical education can provide a positive learning environment for the development of a wide range of skills and attributes. Students' knowledge and skills will be assessed throughout the module and through completion of individual assignments.

Professional Practice in PE 2
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 2. This module aims to provide an opportunity for the student to apply and develop the theoretical and practical underpinnings already explored in the taught program. Students will have the opportunity to complete observational and hands-on activities under the supervision of a teacher in a school or community sport setting. The student will evaluate their core competencies in the domain of physical education using and implementing reflective practice concepts. Placement will take place off-site at various placement locations. Placement is self-sourced, but where possible Portobello Institute will  assist students in sourcing appropriate placement opportunities.  

Student will track their progress in the e-Portfolio which they will complete throughout year 1,2,3 and will be able to use it to showcase their knowledge, skills and competencies to potential employers after they finish the course. This will enhance their digital skills and support their development throughout the programme and beyond.

Physical Education Teacher Education 1
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 1. This module provides students an opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education. The module will include guided learning relating to lesson planning, teaching learning and assessment, reflective practice and lesson delivery. Students will also develop their curriculum specific knowledge and practical skills in communication, demonstration, feedback and assessment.

Research Design
20 credits

Human Movement 2
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 1. This module will allow individuals to implement a non- linear PE pedagogy to improve motor skills competence in all children during physical education. In addition, this module will develop an understanding of best methods to measure motor skill competence during physical education. This module will allow individuals the opportunity to critically evaluate the impact of their teaching on children's motor competence. This module is a progression from the core module Skill Acquisition 1 at Level 4.

Principles of Applied Sport and Exercise
20 credits

This module is delivered in semester 1. The module will develop the knowledge of the students’ practical skills/competencies required of applied sport and exercise practitioners to develop and implement exercise programmes. These will be evaluated through relevant tasks which will take the form of practical based assessments. The module will incorporate support strategies to ensure student progression. This will include various teaching practical activities, feedforward and personal tutorial support.

This module is delivered in semester 2. This module provides further opportunity to develop students’ awareness of contemporary issues. The module will include guided learning through contemporary issues. Students will develop their applied skills through practical sessions. Students’ knowledge and skills will be assessed through completion of assignments. Students are presented with opportunities to gain peer and lecturer formative feedback throughout the semester.

Wellbeing and Health Promotion
10 credits

This module is delivered in Semester 1. This module aims to provide an opportunity for the student to apply and develop the theoretical and practical underpinnings already explored in the taught program. Students will have the opportunity to plan and complete a project relevant to sport, health and physical activity promotion in the local community. Students will work in groups to plan their project. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their leadership, communication, management and teamwork skills. Students will be provided with the opportunity to gain feedback from tutors and peers during small group tutorial sessions throughout the semester.  The student will evaluate their core competencies using and implementing reflective practice concepts.

This module is delivered in Semester 2. This module aims to provide an opportunity for the student to apply and develop the theoretical and practical underpinnings already explored in the taught program. Research Project
40 credits

This is a year-long module. Students must obtain a pass in Research Methods module to be eligible to complete the Dissertation module. This module provides an opportunity to apply the taught and guided learning knowledge and skills to collect, interpret and disseminate a body of work relevant to physical education undergraduate degree level.

Curriculum Models 2
20 credits

This module is delivered in Semester 1. This module provides students an opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education gained at level 4 and level 5. The module will include guided learning aimed at developing critical awareness and analysis of pedagogical principles relevant to PE. Students will also develop their curriculum specific knowledge and practical skills in lesson planning, delivery, feedback and assessment. s. Students are presented with opportunities to gain peer and lecturer formative feedback on their assessment throughout the semester.

Physical Education Teacher Education 2
20 credits

This module is completed in semester 1.  This module provides students an opportunity to further develop their theoretical knowledge and applied skills in physical education. This module will provide students with the opportunity to critically consider the key phases relevant to secondary level physical education. Students will develop their applied skills through practical sessions, supplemented by work-based learning. Students' knowledge and skills will be assessed through completion of individual assignments. Students will be presented with opportunities to gain peer and lecturer formative feedback within each practical session.

Student will track their placement progress in the e-Portfolio which they will complete throughout year 1,2,3 and will be able to use it to showcase their knowledge, skills and competencies to potential employers after they finish the course. This will enhance their digital skills and support their development throughout the programme and beyond.

Alternative qualifications considered

A minimum of Grade O6 in English, Maths and Biology or Physical Education in the Irish Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) is required with a minimum pass in any other 3 subjects or full QQI Level 5 major award (or equivalent) including Anatomy and Physiology. 

Applicants who completed prior study in languages other than English, will be required to demonstrate command of English at IELTS 6.0 level (minimum score of 5.5 in all categories) or equivalent qualification.
