I qualified as a registered children’s nurse in 2007 at Edge Hill university. I commenced my career at Alder Hey on an orthopaedic and trauma ward, were I developed my skills in all aspects of surgical nursing. I have also worked as spinal nurse specialist; this enhanced my skills as an autonomous practitioner and developed my skills further in surveillance and monitoring of complex patients.
Throughout my career I have seen how social determinants of health impact on children, young people, and families, and I am passionate about reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes. For this reason, I took a role in the school health team in Liverpool, to further enhance my knowledge I completed the specialist community public health nursing programme. My role as a SCPHN school nurse included holding caseloads, delivering public health initiatives, delivering the healthy child programme, immunisations, and safeguarding.
Following on from this role to further enhance my clinical examination skills, I undertook a role as nurse practitioner in a paediatric walk-in centre, enhancing my skills in assessment and diagnosis of children and young people. As I am passionate about improving health outcomes, I also completed a master’s in public health during this role, the focus of my dissertation was on health professionals’ knowledge and practice of county lines exploitation of children.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed educating our future nurses, and I am passionate about ensuring students reach their full potential, by sharing evidence-based practice, my knowledge and experience this will enable them to become passionate, competent safe practitioners.
