Nursing and Advanced Practice

Faculty of Health

I am a registered nurse (adult) with many years of clinical experience working in the National Health Service (NHS). I started my career working within haematology and general medicine specialities. After several years, I made a big career change and became a student midwife. Already being a registered nurse I was able to undertake the shortened midwifery training course, which was 18 months in length. I qualified as a midwife and cared for women, babies and their families during the antenatal, intra-natal and postnatal period. I then returned to adult nursing were I became a resuscitation officer, the role enabled me to become a Resuscitation Council (UK) advanced life support, paediatric life support and newborn life support instructor. This included carrying an emergency pager to support clinical staff during emergencies and provide advanced life support to patients. I then returned to haematology and became a transfusion practitioner. This role encompassed the training of clinical staff in all aspects of transfusion medicine, including the patient blood management initiative from NHS Blood and Transplant. A major aspect of the role incorporated patient safety and governance in relation to transfusion. In this role I also carried an emergency pager and attended major haemorrhage emergencies to support clinical staff.

Throughout my career as a nurse I always enjoyed supporting and assessing student nurses and newly qualified nurses in practice. Equally, my role as a resuscitation officer and transfusion practitioner incorporated a high level of teaching and support of clinical staff. With this in mind I undertook a Masters Degree in Professional Education as I aspired to pursue a career in academia. In 2024, after 34 years in the NHS I made the decision and left my clinical career to join Liverpool John Moores University as a nurse lecturer. It is here I will now use my knowledge and skills to support and shape the nurses of the future.

I predominately work in undergraduate nursing. I enjoy teaching the acute aspects of medical nursing, including the acutely unwell adult patient, encompassing clinical skills and resuscitation. Equally, patient safety and governance are an interest of mine.
