I started my nursing education in 1991 and following graduation as a Registered Nurse - Adult, I worked within the fields of Neurological Rehabilitation and Neonatal Intensive Care; These diverse areas of nursing practice allowed me to facilitate person/family centred, individualised care and develop my knowledge and skills to ensure that evidence base, compassionate care was delivered. The absolute privilege of supporting people during their most challenging times has taught me that authentic connection and effective communication is the essence of nursing practice.
During my clinical career I developed a keen interest in legal and ethical issues within clinical practice and undertook a MA in Medicine, Law and Ethics, this was an interesting programme which outlined how the law and ethical decision making was an integral part of daily care delivery. Having taught and supported students in clinical practice, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education teaching qualification which allowed me to develop my skills in education, its development and delivery. I began my career within Higher Education in 2002 where I have worked as Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing. I am passionate about my role as I firmly believe that promoting excellence in education has a direct link to excellence in patient care. I attempt to champion innovative, inclusive, evidence based education whilst engaging students in interactive teaching and learning.
My teaching interests include professional practice, law and ethics, communication skills, leadership and the promotion of excellence in teaching and learning. My research interests focus on ethics at the end of life, the student experience and creative teaching and learning approaches.
My experience as a Senior Lecturer has enabled me to embraced a multitude of roles, including lead for Student and Staff Support, collaborative working at a strategic level with practice partners, programme leadership, unit/module leadership and development, external examiner, consultation and external advising, and curriculum development, delivery and design.
I am passionate about my role as an educator within nursing and believe that praxis can promote excellence in care delivery.
