Richard Ridyard

Richard is a senior lecturer in law, and programme director, at Liverpool John Moores University. He heads the BA in Law, Business, and Management programme, which is a collaboration between the Business and Law Schools. And he is the research lead for the Business, Corporate, Financial and Technology Unit.

Richard’s principal research interests concern financial regulation, company law, corporate governance and business management. His other research interests include freedom of speech, climate policy, AI, and legal pedagogy. He has presented widely in these, and related, fields. This includes presentations at the University Association for Contemporary European Studies, Institute of Humane Studies, McKinsey & Company, the Social Legal Studies Association, and the Art of Management & Organisation conference as well as leading universities such as Oxford, King’s College London, Virginia, and Brock. Richard has also been interviewed by the media, such as BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC North West Today, and BBC North West Tonight.

Richard has won research grants from the Society of Legal Studies, the Institute of Humane Studies, and LJMU. His published work has been cited by, amongst others, the Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Seattle University Law Review, and the Washington University Law Review. Richard is one of the founding co-managing editors of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Risk Regulation, Law, and Policy. And he is a former associate editor of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal.

Richard holds, or has held, fellowships at the Institute of Humane Studies, George Mason University (as a Humane Studies Fellow, and Bernard Marcus Fellow), the Higher Education Academy, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is also a Certified Management & Business Educator, SPRITE+ Expert Fellow, an outreach panel member at the Bank of England, Trustee of Irish Community Care, and an Associate of the Association for the Promotion of Political Economy and the Law (APPEAL).

Also holding awards for teaching, Richard leads the following two postgraduate electives: International Corporate Finance Law, and International Investment Law. At undergraduate level, he teaches on the Law of Business Organisations, and Contract Law courses. He supervises research students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and welcomes email supervision enquiries. Richard is a member of the School of Law’s Teaching and Learning Committee, and is one of the governors of Mount Primary School. One of Richard’s teaching-based focuses is on developing innovative pedagogy, such as game-based learning. He has also written and presented on this subject.

During his studies, Richard received many academic prizes and scholarships. Richard completed the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford, graduating in the top five of his cohort with a Distinction. His dissertation, supervised by Professor Paul Davies, was awarded a Charles Koch Foundation Dissertation Award. Richard also read law (LLB) at Liverpool John Moores University, graduating top of his year with a First, winning the Liverpool Law Society Prize. On the strength of his postgraduate dissertation and academic performance, he was subsequently awarded a Bernard Marcus Fellowship at the Institute of Humane Studies, George Mason University.
