Dr Rizwaan Sabir is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and International Relations within the School of Justice Studies at Liverpool John Moores University, a role he has held since 2015. He also serves as the Programme Leader for the Criminology and International Relations degree programme, which launched in 2025.

His research specialises in counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, and armed Muslim groups, with a particular focus on how counterinsurgency theory, doctrine, and practice have been incorporated into the UK’s domestic ‘War on Terror’ framework.

Dr Sabir provides expert analysis on these topics across various platforms, including broadcast media, print journalism, radio, and X (@RizwaanSabir). He collaborates with civil society, legal, academic, and political organisations, including the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, on matters related to his areas of expertise.
