My primary area of interest is focused on the efficacy of online child protection when protectionist measures such as monitoring and surveillance are deployed to regulate the behaviours of young people. In particular, I am interested in the ideologies embedded into onlin safeguarding practices, and how dominant constructions of gender and sexuality impact their development and deployment within society. My PhD examines this within the context of closeted lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning (LGBQ) young people, demonstrating how dominant assumptions of heteronormativity inadvertently make LGBQ youth more vulnerable online. My ongoing research trajectory is seeking to better understand these barriers, and to explore ways in which they can be broken down to mitigate these risks, whilst at the same time ensuring that the privacy needs of closeted LGBQ young people is protected/preserved.
